Nansi Guevara is a rasquache artist, illustrator, & author based in Brownsville, Texas. Originally from Laredo, Texas, she holds a bachelor’s in Fine Arts in Design from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master’s in Education from Harvard University. She is currently focused on narrative change and cultural organizing to create spaces of resistance and affirmation, and creative economies centered on community cultural wealth. She runs her own freelance illustration for education practice, Corazón Contento, based out of Brownsville, Texas. Nansi has been awarded residencies, fellowships, & grants from the NEA, Artplace America, a Blade of Grass, NALAC, SFAI, and is currently a Constillations fellow at the Center for Cultural Power.

Originaria de Laredo, Texas, tiene una licenciatura en Diseño de la Universidad de Texas en Austin y una Maestría en Educación de la Universidad de Harvard. Actualmente se centra en el cambio narrativo para crear espacios de resistencia y afirmación y economías creativas basadas en riqueza cultural de la comunidad. Dirige su propia práctica independiente de ilustración para educación, Corazón Contento, en Brownsville. Artist statement
My work is about clearing up the distorted mirror of our South Texas Border region. It is about creating and clearing our own mirrors, and studying and recognizing the history, racial scripts, and false narratives that have warped our perspective of our place and of ourselves. My artwork and narrative change work is also based on growning up in the border community of Laredo, Texas. Through collective work, I aim to unveil the true narratives, talent, and strength of our border community. In my teaching, I strive to create an environment where students can explore themselves, guide them into making art based on intuition, core values and beliefs, with a social and artistic responsibility to reflect on their context and be social agents in their community. My artwork expresses the generations of tireless, exploitative labor, how our bodies and our hands, along with our traditions, art, and trades being commodified and profited by a ruthless racist, patriarchal capitalist system. My work weaves the heart and soul of Border Texan Mexicans with the realities of migration, citizenship, and labor. In all, my work is the force that kept my grandma going strong for her children after painful hardship, and desperation in a society that didn’t provide any relief. My work is a vision of hope, a firm belief that we can live better and we deserve to, and a space to dream and imagine for ourselves and see ourselves reflected how we truly are.
Mi trabajo consiste en aclarar el espejo distorsionado de nuestra región de la frontera sur de Texas. Se trata de crear y limpiar nuestros propios espejos, y de estudiar y reconocer la historia, los guiones raciales y las narrativas falsas que han deformado nuestra perspectiva de nuestro lugar y de nosotros mismos. Mi obra de arte y trabajo narrativo se basa en habido crecido en la comunidad fronteriza de Laredo. En manera colectiva, sigo revelando las narrativas verdaderas, el talento y la fuerza de nuestra comunidad fronteriza. En mi trabajo educativo, me esfuerzo por crear un entorno donde los estudiantes puedan explorarse a sí mismos, guiarlos a hacer arte basado en la intuición, valores y creencias fundamentales, con una responsabilidad social y artística de reflexionar sobre su contexto y ser agentes sociales en su comunidad. Mi obra de arte expresa las generaciones de trabajo incansable y explotativo, cómo nuestros cuerpos y nuestras manos, junto con nuestras tradiciones, arte y oficios se mercantilizan y se explotan por un sistema capitalista patriarcal y racista. Mi trabajo teje el corazón y el alma de los mexicanos de la frontera de Texas con las realidades de la migración, la ciudadanía y el trabajo. Mi trabajo es la fuerza que mantuvo a mi abuela fuerte para sus hijos después de penurias dolorosas, y la desesperación en una sociedad que no proporcionó ningún alivio. Mi trabajo es una visión de esperanza, una firme creencia de que podemos vivir mejor y nos lo merecemos, y un espacio para soñar e imaginar por nosotros mismos y vernos reflejados como realmente somos.
